Rem Koolhaas: on context in concept and vice versa
“Revista de Arquitectura” is an academic publication from the University of Chile, that aims to promote a reflection on architecture, the city and the territory, providing a space for discussion from a critical perspective. Each volume usually addresses a specific topic. In this case, it addresses the relationship between “concept” and “context” as a fundamental interaction to define the scope of the architectural work. With this dichotomy we delve into a figure that represents this paradox: Rem Koolhaas. The research will deepen in his methodology to determine if he develops a conceptualization of the context or a contextualization of the concept.
To follow this reasoning and reach to plausible conclusions, we will analyze two exhibitions curated by Rem Koolhaas that reflect two very different moments of his career: the exhibition “Content” (Berlin, 2004) and the Venice Biennale of Architecture in 2014. The aim is to verify weather if his visionary understanding of the context triggers his innovative conceptualization.
